Corrugated Box Supplier: What Is a Corrugated Box? Everything You Need to Know

Blog
You've probably heard someone around you talking about corrugated box suppliers and custom packaging because it's the thing of the current market where we need to deliver to our doorsteps more than we need to nearby shops. Many individuals interchangeably use the terms "cardboard box" and "corrugated box or corrugated carton box." The two terms, however, refer to two different types of containers. The following information was developed by the experts at Vantage-Boxes, a leading supplier of corrugated product solutions, to help readers understand the differences between cardboard boxes and corrugated boxes and which one is ideal for their packaging needs.

Cardboard Boxes vs Corrugated Boxes

A cardboard box is a container made of thick paper stock or heavyweight paper pulp. Examples include cereal boxes, folding takeout containers, and toy packaging. A corrugated box is a multi-layered material container (i.e., one or more fluted layers surrounded by flat liner layers). It is widely utilized in the packaging and transportation of goods.

What's the Difference?

Cardboard boxes and corrugated boxes, as previously stated, are constructed from various materials. This variation in materials has an impact on both the assembling process and the durability of the containers. Cardboard boxes are made from one or more single-layer pieces of material. The components are cut to the correct shape and size before being connected together using glue, staples, tape, or other attaching techniques. As a consequence, a container suited for product packing is created. However, it is not robust enough to survive shipping forces, thus extra packing materials must be employed if the packed goods must be delivered.

Corrugated Composition

The liner-board and medium mix used in a corrugated box affect its strength.
  1. Single Face: One linerboard sheet is pasted to a corrugated medium. The flutes are on display.
  2. Single Wall: Double-face is another name for it. Between two pieces of linerboard, the corrugated medium is attached.
  3. Double Wall: Three sheets of linerboard are bonded together with two mediums in the middle.
  4. Triple Wall: Three mediums are sandwiched between four sheets of linerboard.

Flutes

The corrugated media has arches. They are attached to the linerboard using adhesive to prevent it from bending. When the board is pressed, the gap between the flutes functions as a cushion to protect the contents of the box. It also acts as an insulator, shielding the package from severe temperatures. The linerboard also shields the flutes from harm.

Flutes of Various Types

Corrugated boards come in a variety of flute profiles. Greater vertical compression, cushioning, and strength are provided by larger profiles. Because of their superior visual possibilities, smaller profiles are commonly employed in retail packaging. Flutes of the same kind may have comparable diameters but differ in thickness and use. The five most popular flute profiles of corrugated carton box are as follows:
  1. A-Flute: The first corrugated flute design. There are around 33 flutes per foot.

  1. B-Flute: This flute is frequently used for canned products. It measures 1/8′′ thick and has roughly 47 flutes per foot.

  • C-Flute: This type of flute is commonly used while transporting cartons. It measures 5/32′′ thick and has roughly 39 flutes per foot.

  1. E-Flute: It measures 1/16′′ thick and has roughly 90 flutes per foot.

  1. F-Flute: This type of flute is mostly used in tiny retail packaging. It is 1/32′′ thick and has roughly 125 flutes per foot.
Similarly, many flute profiles can be integrated into a single piece of combination board. Designers of corrugated box suppliers may change the compression strength, cushioning, and thickness of the board by combining various profiles.

Various Box Styles

The most frequent types of boxes include telescope boxes, folders, rigid boxes, slotted boxes, interior forms, and self-erecting boxes. Corrugated boxes can also be made to order to match a client's specific needs.

Telescope Boxes

"Telescope Style" refers to a box with a cover that extends at least two-thirds of the depth of the bottom piece, whereas "Box with Cover" refers to a box with a cover that extends less than two-thirds of the depth. Furthermore, the top and bottom parts fit nicely over each other.

Folders

  • One Piece Folder (OPF): A piece of board is cut such that it has a flat bottom. It also features flaps that create the box's sides and ends. Finally, the side flap extensions come together to form the top.
  • Trays: They are commonly used to house more fragile objects and parts. These boxes are constructed from a single piece of composite board with an uninterrupted bottom. In addition, the end panels include multiple layers of corrugated material.
  • Five Panel Folder (FPF): A fifth panel serves as a closing flap and entirely covers the side panel. They have a single cut and are scored.

Rigid Boxes

They are made up of two similar end panels and a body that folds to generate two side panels, an unbroken bottom, and a top. The flaps are then employed to create the joints that seal the box.

Slotted Boxes

In this form of a box, the blank is scored and slotted for folding purposes. They are frequently made from a single sheet of corrugated fiberboard and supplied and kept flat to save storage space. They're then put together as needed.

Why Should You Use Corrugated Boxes?

There are several advantages to using corrugated boxes to package things, including: Increased Product Protection: Corrugated boxes' multi-layer materials give more strength and support than cardboard boxes' single-layer materials. As a result, corrugated boxes outperform cardboard boxes in terms of preserving their contents from extreme circumstances such as those encountered during shipping operations. Broader Customization Options: Because corrugated boxes are comprised of multi-layer materials, the container design may be more customized. The kind of liner material used, the fluting profile and the combination of liner-fluting layers can all be customized to produce distinct functional and aesthetic properties. Graphics and coatings can be added to the corrugated board to match a specific product or brand image. Better Eco-Friendliness: A corrugated board is a highly recyclable material. New corrugated boxes are typically produced from a mix of virgin and recycled materials, making them a more environmentally friendly product packaging choice.
